The Tetons

I have pretty much written this exact post before in an effort to record Kyle's Spring 2011 trip to Canyonlands. Same story from my end: Kyle takes a cool guy's trip (or cool-guys trip?), Ali wants Kyle to put a summary on the blog for all of our avid readers, Kyle is busy and doesn't really blog and Ali forgets to ask (=nag) him, Kyle leaves for "Meat Retreat" (the final hunting and meat processing weekend of the deer season), at the same time Alison is trying to wrap up the previous year so she can print the blog so Alison writes the post.

So, welcome to Kyle's 2013 Teton's Trip - a la Alison. And to make this post even less accurate, I not only chose the "highlight" photos but when I was uploading them it took them completely out of the order they were in on our computer (which I hope/assume was chronological) - probably because they are from different cameras, so this is a jumbled mess. And I'm not going to try to rearrange them. And I'm not going to get any of the facts right about where exactly they were or what they did. But I may not be able to help myself from offering a little bit of sarcastic commentary.

Cast of characters (probably the only thing I'll get right):
Kyle
brother builder gun-slinger Luke
friend former and current housemate Carlos
friend German fellow anesthesiologist Gunnar
friend builder hunter Joel

And the Afghan woman they met on the trek. Wait no, that's just Carlos
I'm good. Or Gig'em. Probably both.
 My man. Hot helmet. :)
 Bros
Pretty lake - I know you can see that, but I just can't help myself.
4 out of 5 lightweight backpackers cut their toothbrushes in half
 Carlos insta-cool filter
Kyle wants an entry like this to our house. I told him maybe.
 But none of these.
This was supposed to be the beginning.
Just Wow
This was supposed to be the end.
Ah, the clean and fed cowboys.
From the drive in I think
 Moose
 Moose tracks?
 Cary a hand gun
 Homemakeing, boy-style
Doing his tied-for-first favorite thing (backpacking and deer hunting)
Months of planning, meticulous weighing and spreadsheeting and cutting weight and these boys bring 3 (4?!) DSLR cameras and a couple of phones w/ cameras. The one they planned using, the back-up, and a Carlos stow-away that felt at home with his extra power bars.
The tripod was actually a great idea though
Hope they have years and years of trips like this. (But also I'm taking donations to get a hat for Kyle that keeps his head warm and doesn't get all pointy like a smurf hat.)
 Peaceful. Deceptively cold.
I kept calling this skree but I think it has another name because the pieces are so big.
Their system improves every year - I think next time they're all carrying maps. Can't hurt!
 Basecamp
Either a park-provided anti-bear food canister, or Carlos' stash of extra snacks. Not sure.
 The kitchen
 The view
 The soup
The cook (at least here)
 Joel: Yippee!
I haven't actually tried to point out the Tetons - could those be they?
 Gettin' serious
 Are they tired?
 Gunnar letting the wind help
 Wow Luke, just wow.
Oh, maybe the 4th camera was the little video one.
 Resting the footsies
Done and done. (Or ready to start?) I think done.
This was getting ready. In fact I think all of these coming up are from the beginning.
 Amazing
Love the colors in this one.
More Moose. I am dying to see one of these. I need to actually go somewhere that they live.
I have less of a need to see one of these - I think they said they saw 3-4?
 One of my favorites.
Another Bar - doesn't it look a little close to you? Hopefully we're zoomed in here...
This took them somewhere I'm assuming.
 Love me some solar flare.
Okay, well I probably really botched most of this but at least the photos are preserved. These boys really do love these trips and its easy to see why. I'm sure they're already dreaming about their next one. And I'm sure I'll mess up that post too. :)

Strike a Pose

A few months ago our architect asked if she could send over a professional photographer to get some shots for the house for her portfolio. The lady and her husband/assistant were super nice and (it's a small world) actually know a lot of the Mezger clan in the Marble Falls area (where they live). I was definitely ogling her equipment - but after seeing these photos I'm equally impressed with her skills, especially in photoshop! It was fun to watch her work as well as fun to see Celeste (the architect) at work using her mad decorating skills to stage our place with what we had and some things she brought over (including all the beautiful fresh flowers which got moved around the house). It gave me some ideas...The house both looks better and worse in these - of course it looks clean and sort of "perfect" but it also seems pretty unlived in plus I like some of the things we've done since then to continue adding a more personal stamp. Alright, enough disclaimers. Here she is.

Front (looks like a tornado is coming)
 Come on in.
 Eat with us.
 Cook with me.
 Command Central (Mud Room)
 Let's just hang out.
 {how is she NOT in this picture?????}
 Be our guest.
 The feaux office.
 Sleep.
 Clean and primped.
 Play!!!
Scrub a dub dub - 3 kids in the tub
 Boy
 Girls
Come back again, ya here?!

2013 with a pretty bow on top

The day after Christmas I was ready to take all of the decorations down. I held out a couple of days (mostly due to necessity) but it came down the following Monday - before New Year's. Don't get me wrong: I.LOVE.CHRISTMAS. But even with the shortened season this year (due to the late Thanksgiving - and yes, I wait to break out Christmas until after Thankgiving!) I am always just as ready to pack it all up as I was to get it all out! I know I'm talking about Christmas as if it is defined solely by the decorations in our house, but I think you know what I mean. I love the extra cozy, extra special feeling the tree and stockings and all the little red/green touches invoke, but I equally love the clean, fresh, let's-start-over, His-mercies-are-new-every-morning feel of kicking off the New Year without all the extra stuff.

Wow, I totally digressed. This was suppose to be an intro to let you know that there are a BUNCH of new posts below. This is the digital/internet version of me packing up Christmas. It's time to move on with 2014 and that means I want to get our 2013 blog book printed. Which means I actually have to wrap up all the intended 2013 posts...so here you are.

-Christmas at School
-The Cookie Tradition
-The Four Days of Christmas
-Merry Christmas (Officially)

And since this is where I began, I'll close with some photos of all that Christmas stuff I was talking about.

The novelty will wear off but its been fun all year to have our first X season in the house. Christmas was no exception. The tree we bought last year (unseen, but with my mom's approval) was a perfect fit for that little corner between the kitchen counter/bar and the big slidy door. Tall, skinny and very very real looking. I am officially an artificial-tree-believer. No sap, no pine needles until February. For us right now, the real tree is Christmas romanticized and the fake one is Christmas practicalized.
I'd give my mom a hard time about taking her sweet time, but that wouldn't be fair given how crazy intricate these stockings are and the fact that she has made us 3 of them for us. Maggie's was just shy of making it up in time for the actual day...
Here's all 5 of us on our faux mantle - and Kyle's childhood stocking handing the "wrong" way. :)
Some details - that's Bee's signature (on each one)
My grandchildren are going to have to be happy with store-bought if its up to me because I will never have the patience for this...
All the stuffing and bead work and embroidery makes my fingers and brain hurt.
And some of our fun new decorations thanks to Kindergarten. I love this stuff - my mom still has a bunch of my and Alex's stuff up.

the pine-cone tree
the manger with little clay people
Our tree at night - the real one, the fun glowing one.
Alright, bye bye 2013. Welcome 2014.

I've still got a few more posts to do to wrap up 2013 but this at least gets Christmas done! Yippie!
